If you’ve been following my Insta-stories, you would have seen my trial with the doTerra Allergy oil roller I was gifted by Jeanne-Riette over at @mammachefjozi
Now, let me start by saying this is not my first time using oils, I am not a complete skeptic when it comes to what is considered “alternative medicine” my therapist believes in it whole heartedly, and it’s through gaining understanding on how your body and mind work, that I was curious to give the oil roller a try.
I was excited for this trial because, A: It’s not a version of essential oil therapy that I’ve tried before. (I have a water diffuser and have used Tea Tree Oil in my younger years quite prolifically) and B: I have a real problem with allergic rhinitis, and at this point in the game (three months in) I’d give anything a try.
So lets get all the elephants in the room out the way before we start.
I am quoting the doTerra website here, but in my many moons on this earth, I have read a book or two of a biological nature, and I can definitely agree with what is said.
Pure essential oils offer an alternative to synthetic products. Essential oils are more than just natural products. Each with a unique chemical makeup, essential oils have dozens of benefits for the body and mind. Essential oil benefits are determined by the chemistry of the plants. If these natural chemicals are properly extracted, they can be used to help you physically, mentally, and emotionally in your daily life.https://www.doterra.com/US/en/what-is-an-essential-oil
So basically it’s not just about it being an essential oil, it’s about it being a QUALITY essential oil (cue my rant about Honey and honey syrup). So in other words, cheap is nasty and won’t give you the benefit you deserve.
Essential oils have been used for thousands of years, I mean, the wise men brought Jesus Frankincense and Myrrh when he was born. So this is not a new trend at all. As a kid, my mom used to make us gargle with tea tree oil in warm water (it has similar properties to an anti bacterial, and helps your body fight the germs.).
The uses for essential oils are in their 100’s :
Support good oral hygiene,*
Reduce appearance of skin imperfections,
Promote healthy digestion,*
Cleanse and purify the air,
Promote an uplifting atmosphere,
Maintain healthy respiratory system and clear breathing,*

How do essential oils work?
Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell, and long-term memory (5Trusted Source).
The limbic system also plays a role in controlling several unconscious physiological functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. As such, some people claim that essential oils can exert a physical effect on your body.https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/what-are-essential-oils#how-they-work
Okay so elephants in the room
It’s not cheap, it’s natural (not dance around a rune natural, but nature), it doesn’t work like pharmaceuticals will. It will take a little while, days, to feel a physical result. Pharmaceuticals are designed to bomb your system, and literally take no prisoners, essential oils are natural and gentle on your body.
Did it really work?
The short answer? Yes, it worked, when I used it properly! Initially I was only using it once in the morning and maybe during the day and then at bed time again, and it helped a little to alleviate the pressure from my sinus headache, but not really making a difference I could notice. The wonderful scent was lifting my mood for sure.
Then I started using it as directed by Jeanne-Riette (because I have acute sinusitis) so I can roll a little oil on the bridge of my nose and even across my sinus cavities, the scent is literally like the calmest feeling ever, and it’s almost an instant relief for my headache. I am a little concerned that I may get a little breakout on the bridge of my nose from all the coconut oil, but I’m pretty sure it’ll more than likely take my wrinkles away before it gives me a break out!
The little roller is 10ml, and I think I’ve only used maybe 2ml of that in the week that I’ve been using it. The allergy relief roller is a blend of lavender, peppermint and lemon oils in a coconut oil base. Using just a few drops of the essential oils to make the blend, so you use a tiny amount to make the 10ml roller and it will more than likely last a month or two.
I will say this as a caution
Essential oils are not a cure-all. Some people have wonderful results from using them, some people only have mediocre results. I would say my result has smashed my expectation, and is helping me to cope with my sinus allergy without having to medicate pharmaceutically too often. (read not once in a week).
Bearing in mind I am also on chronic meds for depression, so my body has enough chemicals rolling around in it, I’m trying to rid my body of as many of these foreign visitors as possible over time. Starting with allergy relief.
Also, please follow the directions for use to the T. Some essential oils are not to be ingested (taken internally), so make sure you know how to use the essential oil in it’s proper manner, otherwise you could harm your body.
It’s a winner! Save up, start a stokvel, get vouchers for your birthday and Christmas. Do what you must to get a set of oils, and give it a try. Find somebody you know who has some doTerra oils and ask them, they will tell you pretty much the same thing, they work. Don’t be a skeptical Susan like I was, and don’t be afraid to ask questions about the oils, what they can be used for, read the booklet, get familiar, see if there’s one that you can get to start off with.
I am going to be starting a home kit of my own, no I’m not sharing, okay maybe 😉
