So my son is eating solids now, he’s Five and a half months, chomping like a champion. I try make all his food, especially the first foods, cause, well, then I know exactly what’s in it and it’s a bit more budget friendly. I thought I’d include a little “how to” on the blog for those that were asking.
You will need:
- 1 x small butternut peeled, de-seeded and chopped into small chunks.
- A small pot and a little water for boiling.
- Boil the butternut till super soft and squishy, take some water off – I leave about half a cup of water for a small butternut.
- Using a stick blender, blend till very very smooth.
- It should be the consistency of custard, this will freeze and defrost well.
- I store in plastic 70ml containers in the freezer but you can also use ice cube trays, clean glass jars or freezer bags to store.
- Defrost in microwave gently, stir well to make sure there aren’t any hot spots.
- Don’t keep longer than a month in the freezer to be safe, and always taste check before giving to baby to make sure it’s still yummy.
- So far we’ve done butternut and sweet potatoes with our second one, we’ll be moving onto home made oats soon.
- Some veggies I’ve done before: zucchini/baby marrow – not very popular, but mixed with some butternut it goes down well.
- Mashed potatoes – make it quite runny so it defrosts nicely.
- Peas, corn, carrots, and peppers (not too much, this can be a flavour addition to other veg)
- Fruits are so easy – apples, pears, berries, peaches, plums (go easy with the plums they are, after all, baby prunes).
- Bananas you can just mash and give straight, but see how their tummies respond cause they are prone to cause constipation.
- Avo – probably the best thing ever, just mashed plain is amazing.
When baby gets bigger and used to single foods you can start blending them and adding spices to make it super delicious.
